Lord knows, we experienced a wicked year of community violence and upheaval that ended with a federal campaign about a war of the words. Our mailboxes were packed with campaign mailers costing into the billions of dollars that likely could have addressed much of our poverty. Many people have not recovered from the Great Recession.

Individuals like Ross Perot, and now Donald Trump, have shown that a single person with the resources to finance their own campaign can drive the primary process. The way to do this is to shorten the election cycle and use public funds for all campaigns. These are not radical or even new ideas.
