As of 2002, NetCDF4 uses the Hierarchical Data Format version 5 (HDF5) as a backend, improving the speed of parallel I/O on chunks. NetCDF files contain metadata that supports more efficient data indexing and retrieval, including opening files remotely and virtually browsing their structure without loading everything into memory.
